Vila Real de Santo António
The ancient village of Santo António De Arenialla, builded by fishermen at the edge of Guadiana
River, was destroyed by a violent storm. With the same determination showed in the rebuild of Lisbon after the 1755’s
earthquake, Marquês De Pombal decided to rebuild a new “Santo António” from the ancient ruins.
The presence of sardines and tuna fish in the waters of the Algarve’s Coast, made the
city in an important “fishing center”, while the city’s port were used by boats that floated the Guadiana
River to load ore extracted from São Domingos mines.
The city innovated in 1886, was the first town in Algarve to have gás ilumination.
