Tavira

With long and inviting beaches, typical roofs and chimneys, this colourful city will give you a beautiful sight of the Gilão River and His roman bridge. Here, you can find several churches to visit: Santa Maria do Castelo (XIII – XVIII Centuries), Misericórdia (Renaissance), Nossa Senhora das Ondas (XVII century), São José (with Gothic and Manueline elements), churches São Paulo e Carmo (XVII – XVIII centuries). If you walk along the Dona Brite Avenue, you will see the beautiful medieval houses with gothic styled windows and doors. In the surroundings, in the little Luz village, there is a church ,of the time of the Rnaissance, wich was, for many centuries, place of pilgrimage.

Vila Real de Santo António

The ancient village of Santo António De Arenialla, builded by fishermen at the edge of Guadiana River, was destroyed by a violent storm. With the same determination showed in the rebuild of Lisbon after the 1755’s earthquake, Marquês De Pombal decided to rebuild a new “Santo António” from the ancient ruins.

The presence of sardines and tuna fish in the waters of the Algarve’s Coast, made the city in an important “fishing center”, while the city’s port were used by boats that floated the Guadiana River to load ore extracted from São Domingos mines.

The city innovated in 1886, was the first town in Algarve to have gás ilumination.
